Last month in my post for Birmingham Moms Blog, I declared to the world that I was breaking up with dieting and starting a new relationship with becoming strong. It's been one month since I started going to Steel Strength Training (SST) three times per week. SST is strictly strength training - it's not boot camp or CrossFit (these things aren't bad or anything, but they're just not for me). It's only been a month, but I am absolutely loving it. Nate (the owner and head trainer) is super encouraging, super realistic, and super knowledgable. I've been going three mornings a week (his recommended number of days to train), and I'm already seeing results. It's pretty amazing.
What's funny is that in emailing with Nate about nutrition, I sent him my blog of all the diets I've done over the last 15 years or so. After reading it, Nate emailed be back and said, "So, my suggestion would be that you never do another diet again!" I literally laughed out loud because I had already submitted my "Dear Diet" post to Birmingham Moms Blog. We talked a little more about my relationship with food and dieting and self-image, and Nate said that he was picking up that I'm really skeptical that anything can actually work because of everything that I've tried and then have either failed or been failed. Yep. That's me. So true.
Then I went to the gym this morning for my first progress session (weight, measurements, progress photos, and a chat about new goals for the month and questions/comments/etc. about the program. And guess what? I'm shrinking.
Okay, so it's not drastic or anything, but I'm smaller today that I was when I started, so that's something to celebrate! I also have noticed an increase in my energy levels, which for anyone who has spent any time with a 16-month-old, increased energy is the BEST side-effect of exercise.
If you're interested learning more about SST, they're offering a free challenge this month for anyone who wants to work on their health.
I'm always interested to hear what others do to increase their health. What are you doing this year to get fit?
