You may have noticed, but Jason and I really like to travel. Our goal is to see as much for the U.S. as we can before we have kids. Then we'll take a few years off from traveling to start our family, and then go back to the places that are kid-friendly.
In that regard, to celebrate our one year anniversary, Jason and I planned a 6 day, 5 night trip to Seattle, WA. Now, I'm well aware that Seattle is quite a distance from ole home sweet Alabama, but we figured that we would spend almost as much money traveling somewhere closer by the time we paid for hotel, food, and activities, but we wouldn't be seeing one of the places on our "list". Plus, we got a GREAT deal on our flight.
Traveling Tip: If you live in a southeastern city with access to Southwest, take advantage of it. Check flights every Tuesday. Also, sign up for a Rapid Rewards account AND their emails. We found a flight that was nonstop from Atlanta to Seattle for about $600 for both of us, round trip. Then, a week after we booked our flights, we got an email from Southwest that said there was some sort of special on certain flights. Jason checked to see if our flight was one of them, and IT WAS. It was $25 cheaper, per person, per way, so that made our flights $500 TOTAL! Y'all, that's incredible to fly from one corner of the country to another. Also, our next flight will be free with our Rapid Rewards account.
So, off we went to Seattle. We left September 18th and arrived back to Atlanta on September 24th. Here is a review of our trip:
Where we stayed: Usually, I'm a big fan of finding a hotel with a special going on. That's what we did in NYC this past February, and that's what we have done in all of our past travels. But, when looking for a place like that in Seattle, I just couldn't find anything. So I started searching for condos. I figured that since it was our anniversary trip, it might be fun to stay on one of the little islands near Seattle and just take the ferry back and forth. But alas, Jason and I are city people. I started searching for condos for rent in the city, and I found one. When we arrived, I was just praying that it was halfway decent...and thankfully IT WAS! The price was better than any hotel I could find by about $75 a night. Our cleaning fee was waved since we stayed at least 5 nights. And, it was in the heart of the city, which was the best part. So, if you're planning a trip to Seattle, look up Emerald City Suites.
Where we ate: One thing that I can't stand doing is planning a trip around food. I just don't like it. I feel as if it takes away some of my freedom. But there are a few types of food that Jason and I always try to get while we're on vacation. One of them is sushi, the other is pizza (but not at the same time). We like to experience both in every city we visit. As luck would have it, sushi is basically on every corner in Seattle, so we got to eat the best sushi of our lives while we were there. Other restaurants we visited are listed below -
Belltown Pub
2322 1st Ave.
Seattle, WA
(Belltown)
Type of food: American/Pub foods
I'd go back in a heartbeat
Wasabi Bistro
2311 2nd Ave..
Seattle, WA
(Belltown)
Type of food: Sushi
Best sushi I've ever had
131 Water Kitchen & Bar
131 Water Street, Unit 127
Vancouver, BC
Type of food: Unusual American-ish & British
I would go back to try the mac n' cheese
Serious Pie
316 Virginia St.
Seattle, WA
(Downtown)
Type of food: Pizza
It was good, but unusual. Also, small portions.
Slim's Last Chance
5605 1st Ave. S.
Seattle, WA
(SoDo)
Type of food: Chili, burgers, pub food
This was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.
I'd go back and try the spicier chili with cornbread. I'd also go back when it was later to see the live music.
Row House Cafe
1170 Republican St.
Seattle, WA
Type of food: Brunch
This was one of the best meals we had in Seattle. Such a cool atmosphere and unique brunch items.
Manhattan
1419 12th Ave.
Seattle, WA
(Capital Hill)
Type of food: Southern with an upscale twist
Best meal we had in Seattle. Fine cuisine with a southern twist. It was SO good. And they had fried cookie with ice cream, which was very similar to Jackson's cookie dough eggrolls. YUM!
Taco Del Mar
107 1st Ave. S
Seattle, WA
(Pioneer Square)
Type of food: Tacos & Burritos
This was so-so. I was hoping it would be really good because they're all over the place in Seattle, kind of like Moe's. But I think Moe's is better.
Belltown Pizza
2422 1st Ave.
Seatlle, WA
(Belltown)
Type of food: Pizza
Better than Serious Pie. This place was right below our condo, so it's probably good we didn't find it earlier...we would have had it everyday.
What we did:
Day 1 - Getting acquainted with Seattle
Flowers at Pike Place Market
Pike Place Market
Giant fruits and veggies at Pike Place
This is where they throw the fish!
Beautiful skyline from Kerry Park
View as the sun began to set
Jason and I at Kerry Park
Our sushi order at Wasabi. Best sushi ever.
Day 2 - Vancouver, BC
The drive from Seattle to Canada is breathtaking.
Oh Canada
Since we won't make it to London anytime soon, Jason took full advantage of the whole BRITISH Columbia thing.
Beautiful Vancouver skyline
Such a joy to see these sweet friends.
Day 3 - Back in Seattle. Sightseeing. Lots of Walking. Matt Nathanson concert in SoDo.
Saturday morning we went for the longest and hilliest walk of our life. But it was beautiful in every way.
Jason on a piece of "public art"
I don't think that this picture does Seattle justice, but just look at this panoramic view.
Northwest beaches are way different than the beaches Jason and I grew up on in Destin, FL & Daytona Beach, FL.
We happened across this place before the concert. After I saw the name, I realized it was on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives!
I ventured out and get chili and cornbread.
Jason stuck to the basics and got a burger and cheese fries.
Slim's Last Chance was the name of this unique little dive.
Joshua Radin - Matt Nathanson's opening band
Matt Nathanson
Day 4 - Our first wedding anniversary
Starting off our first anniversary with brunch at The Row House
I got this thing that was basically an omelet with Seattle's version of cheese grits.
Jason got french toast, but ti was made out of layers or a croissant.
After brunch, we went to Mars Hill Church.
More beautiful views of the city
We had our anniversary dinner at Manhattan, aka, the best restaurant we went to in Seattle.
Jason got the traditional surf and turf.
I got fried chicken with some sort of potato. It was SO GOOD.
Our "official" one year anniversary gifts were tickets to see Fall Out Boy (for Jason) and Justin Timberlake (for me) since the first anniversary theme is paper. But Jason threw in a little surprise, and I got him some new fall clothes while we were in Seattle :)
After dinner we went to look at the ferris wheel because Jason had never seen one this big before. I wanted to ride it, but he was a scaredy-cat :) J/K, I don't like heights either.
Day 5 - Duck Tour, more sightseeing, and a quite night at the condo to pack
Ride the Ducks!
View of Seattle from the duck tour.
Outside the first Starbucks
Someone told me that this isn't actually the first Starbucks, it's just the oldest. Apparently the first one burned down. So to me that means, this was the first.
My coffee + My souvenir mug = Happy Jessica, so let's go home now
Day 6 - Packing, cleaning, planes, trains, and automobiles to get us back to home sweet Birmingham.
Goodbye beautiful Seattle!
